A really great article on the craftsmen behind the artists.
I am still intrigued by the divide of craftmanship and art, but I have dropped the idea of making art about it. There is a lot of crap sold to tourists here ; bad paintings, wooden sculptures, necklaces etc. Right next to all the artisan stuff is postcards, sun glasses and cheap watches. I think it is mostly senegalese people selling it, and it all seems to come from the same factory - at least the african sculptures. It is interesting how they are selling all this 'africrap' when in reality there is no indigenous population on this island.
